Here’s the latest happenings in the G5…
Math: In the first section, Unit Cubes and Volume, students learn to call the amount of space an object takes up volume. Volume is measured in cubes. For example, this prism has a volume of 120 cubes.
In the second section, Expressions for Finding Volume, students find the volume of a rectangular prism by multiplying the side lengths or by multiplying the area of the base by the height. For example, they can multiply the length by width by height, or 3×5×63×5×6 or they can find the bottom area by multiplying 3×53×5 to get 15 and then multiplying 15 by 6. The volume of this rectangular prism is 90 cubic units. In the final section, Volume of Solid Figures, students learn that some figures are made from two rectangular prisms. They break apart these figures and find the volume of each prism. Then, they add the volumes of the two prisms to find the total volume of the figure. Depending on how they break it apart, they can find the volume in different ways. They could multiply in these ways to find the volume of the figure: (3×3×5)+(5×2×5)(3×5×5)+(2×2×5)(3×3×5)+(5×2×5)(3×5×5)+(2×2×5) Try it at home!Find the volume of these figures with your student. L.A: Language Arts is going full swing with Daily 5!! The students have been learning literary devices such as hyperbole, onomatopoeia, dramatic irony, situational irony, and verbal irony. We started spelling lesson 1 on short vowels and complete their spelling list on Friday. They also know how to pick just right books and practiced their stamina in reading/writing. Things are off to a great start!!! Please remind them to always come to class with a good fit book and continue to read at least 35 minutes a night. |
Social Studies: Students have started Social Studies with Geography of the United States. Their first challenge was creating a world map with all 7 continents, 5 oceans, the Equator and Prime Meridian, and a Compass Rose. They will be also learning about the line of longitude/latitude, the hemispheres, and all the different land forms. |
Science: The Earth and Sun Module provides students with experiences to explore the properties of the atmosphere, energy transfer from the Sun to Earth, and the dynamics of weather and water cycling in Earth’s atmosphere. Other experiences help students to develop and use models to understand Earth’s place in the solar system, and the interactions of Earth, the Sun, and the Moon to reveal predictable patterns—daily length and direction of shadows, day and night, and the seasonal appearance of stars in the night sky. Students gain experiences that will contribute to the understanding of crosscutting concepts of patterns; cause and effect; scale, proportion, and quantity; systems and system models; and energy and matter. |
SEL/Leadership/Teamwork/G5 Life: We are continuing to work on learning how to be respectful to our peers in the classroom. All students are doing an awesome job leading the way and setting a good example at Cherry Crest. |
FYI - Applications for Advanced Learning winter testing are now open. Any parent/guardian of a BSD student in grades 1-11 may apply for their student to test. Any parent of a private/home-school student in grades 1-11 who lives within the Bellevue School District service area may also apply for their child to test. Applications must be submitted by 4:00 p.m. on October 31, 2022. |
