Orienteering 2021

5th Grade Orienteering

Today your student completed their second portion of orienteering at the Bridle Trails State Park! Despite the soggy and muddy weather, they used a map and compass to navigate over 2 miles of trails. Everyone seemed like they had a fun and energizing time. Attached is a copy of the map they used and some discussion questions.

Discussion Questions:

- what direction on the map is North, South, East & West?

- what are the differences between the thicker dotted lines and thinner dotted lines?

- what path did we take today?

- where on the map did we enter and exit the park?

October 25th Update

Math: We started a new math unit, Fractions as Quotients and Fraction Multiplication.  In this unit, students solve problems involving division of whole numbers with answers that are fractions (which could be in the form of mixed numbers). They develop an understanding of fractions as the division of the numerator by the denominator, that is a÷b=. They then solve problems that involve the multiplication of a whole number by a fraction or mixed number. There are three sections in this unit. The first section is Fractions as Quotients. In this section, students learn that fractions are quotients and can be interpreted as division of the numerator by the denominator. Students draw and analyze tape diagrams that represent sharing situations. Through the context of first sharing 1, then sharing more than 1, then sharing a number of things with increasingly more people, students notice patterns and begin to understand that in general . =a÷b. For example, students use the diagram below to show 4 objects being shared by 3 people, or 4÷3, which can also be written as a fraction, . The second section is Fractions as Whole Numbers. In this section, students make connections between multiplication and division and use visual representations that can show both operations. For example, the diagram above can also represent 4 groups of  , or 4×. Students discover ways of finding the product of a fraction and whole number that make sense to them and connect the product to the context and diagrams. They multiply a whole number by a fraction, ×q. The final section is Area and Fractional Side Lengths. In this section, students use what they know about the area of rectangles with whole number side lengths to find the area of rectangles that have one whole number side length and one fractional side length. The expression 6×16×1 represents the area of a rectangle that is 6 units by 1 unit. In the same way, 6×  represents the area of a rectangle that is 6 units by   unit. In addition, students see that the expressions 6× , 6×2× , and 12×  can all represent the area of this same diagram.  Students analyze diagrams where one side length is a mixed number, for example a rectangle that is 2 by 3 . They decompose the shaded region to show the whole units and the fractional units.

L.A:  The students have been learning about story structure for their comprehension strategy and completed their spelling list focused on long a, and long e, sounds.  They learned about the 4 kinds of sentences and a revising structure called ARMS and editing using COPS. They also learned how to navigate Minecraft EDU and are engaged in a character study project.  Please remind them to always come to class with a good-fit book and continue to read at least 35 minutes a night.

Social Studies: Students finished learning about US Geography and will be starting a new lesson on Indigenous Groups and Cultural Regions. The students installed Minecraft EDU on their school laptops and will be using the application for future assignments and projects.  They are currently finishing up a landforms project in Minecraft EDU.

Science:  Students explore how the relative sizes and distances of the Earth, Sun and moon. They learn about natural objects in the sky that can be observed in the day, night and both day and night. Furthermore, they learn about the phases of the moon and the solar system.
