Mrs. Tamayo, Ms. Stevens, and I would like to wish you all a Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!  We've enjoyed getting to know each and every one of you and look forward to being with you for 2021!   One of the great things about the New Year, is that everyone gets a fresh start.  No matter what happened last year, we get to start off fresh and look ahead to brighter days...

G5 Week 13 Update!

Cultural Celebrations from Around the World Live Assembly . On December 16th we will host our final live assembly event of 2020. Our theme is Cultural Celebrations and Traditions throughout the Year. To learn more about our students and their families (You!) we’re asking students to participate in this school-wide Flipgrid to share with us about their celebrations and traditions throughout the schoolyear. You can also join your student(s) in the video to share about your culture and traditions. Winter Book Fair! Our Usborne Winter Book Fair officially kicks off on Monday Dec. 7th and runs through Fri. Dec. 11th. The fair is available NOW anytime for shopping online until 12/11 and the books will ship right to your home. https://v3897.myubam.com/ On Monday 12/7 there will be a 30-40 minute live virtual event.  You will be able to watch videos about the books, ask for personal recommendations AND have the chance to WIN a prize! Math: We continue to work on multiplying and dividing fractions in Unit 3. The next unit is multiplying and dividing with fractions. In this unit, your child will learn to ·        Multiply a whole number by a unit fraction ·        Multiply a whole number by a non-unit fraction ·        Multiply two fractions Using the relationship between multiplication and division, your child will discover how to: ·        Divide a whole number by a whole number ·        Divide a whole number by a unit fraction ·        Divide a unit fraction by a whole number Throughout the unit, students will also practice comparing, adding, and subtracting fractions. This helps them maintain what they have learned. It also helps them to see how the various fractional operations are alike and how they are different. It is particularly important for your child to realize that comparing, adding and subtracting fractions require the denominators to be the same. For multiplying and dividing, this is not true.

L.A:  The students started a new spelling list focusing on words with /oo/ and /yoo/ sounds.  They will also be working on sequence of events, suffixes, and common/proper nouns.  Our comprehension strategy will be focused around monitoring and clarifying for understanding.  Please continue to complete your lexia readings each week.

Social Studies:  The students have complete lesson 2 on Indigenous Peoples and Their land.  The essential question they focused on was “How did Indigenous peoples adapt to different environments in North America?”  They looked at maps and photographs in the text to trace migration routes of the first peoples and summarized how these groups adapted to different environments.  We will review this week and have an assessment on Tuesday.

Science: Students learned about the Earth’s atmosphere, weather and the weather variables meteorologists use to measure the conditions of the atmosphere. They collected weather data from an online weather site like the National Weather Service. You can increase your child’s interest in weather by keeping track of the changes in weather together. Check out the weather maps in the daily newspaper or online, or watch the news for weather reports.
