G5 Week 6 Update!
I can’t believe it’s already October! Time flies when you are having fun, especially in the G5! Here’s the latest happenings in the G5…
Students have been working on comparing fractions, finding equivalent fractions, adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers with like/unlike denominators. Students practice finding a common denominator, then making equivalent fractions in order to compare or add/subtract fractions with unlike denominators.
Students have daily Freckle assignments, usually fact practice and fractions practice. Fact practices should take a few minutes, while the fractions practice may take 20-30 minutes. If your child needs support with the Fractions practice, please encourage him/her to come to Office Hours, email me or direct message me through the Teams chat.
L.A: Language Arts is going at full speed now! This month so far, the students have been learning about dramatic irony, situational irony, and verbal irony. They learned to use story mountains to comprehend story structure. They also covered two spelling word lists with short/long vowel sounds. Most recently, the students learned about “theme” and practiced identifying themes in songs/texts. The students have also been engaged in writing activities/assignments on their online Night Zookeeper. Please ask them to share their zoo with you. Please remind them to meet their required reading minutes on LEXIA each week and read at least 35 minutes a night.
G4 Updates:
In math: We continue to work into addition and subtraction in the thousands.
Students are:
*showing their thinking
*using ‘math talk’
* checking the multi-step process for accuracy
* borrowing/carrying or ungrouping/regrouping
Our consistent routine invites shared work, large and small group work, as well as math mysteries, games, readings and chants!
In Science: Students may engage in STEM activities (hands on/observations and explorations) 1-2x month via Teams Announcements-
- Always posted as announcements (vs. Assignments)
- Virtual modeling and supports always provided
- Student-sharing work is optional
We will increase our science reading and modeling of engineering design as possible. Please ask your student to show you the science announcements so far. This is on Teams and is modeled.
ELA/SS: We continue to work on sharing our story (personal identity/personal narrative) and learning the story of the land around us.
~ Story Elements: How to tell a good story?
~ Notes: reading and response journals, map making options and community curiosities
~ Students are encouraged to use the dictation and spell check tool to increase engagement and interaction
~ We are increasing our non-fiction reading and our funds of knowledge by using NewsEla
~ We aim to grow knowledge and understanding about the First Nations to Washington state
SEL/Leadership/Teamwork/G5x Life: We are continuing to work on learning how to be respectful to our peers in the classroom. All students are doing an awesome job leading the way and setting a good example at Cherry Crest.

2. We are celebrating our diverse Cherry Crest Community! Please view and add to the “I Love My Culture” Flipgrid here.
3. City of Bellevue launches The Great Bellevue Scavenger Hunt October 2-30
With Covid-19 keeping people closer to home and looking for things to do, the City of Bellevue has launched a City-wide scavenger hunt via the free Goose Chase app that will run October 2-30. The game gives families a safe and fun way to enjoy time together by sharing challenges and exploring in and around your home, neighborhood and the city of Bellevue! New “missions” will be released three times/week throughout the game. Each of the four weeks will have a theme (e.g. Go Explore; Get Creative; Fall Favorites; Best of Bellevue) and each theme will have a little intro video by various people – the first done by our Mayor.
