Community Service // Fall 2014
Today in class, I spent time introducing two new community service projects to kids that we will be doing in the coming weeks! Both will be going on the same week (November 3-7), so it’s about to get busy, busy! We’ll see how these projects go, but our goal for the year is to do six different service learning events between now and June.
We’re looking forward to have our students act responsibly, as leaders, helping our community here at Cherry Crest and beyond!
MISSION ONE: Operation Gratitude
Wanting to get rid of all the extra sugar in your house after Halloween weekend?! Beginning the week after Halloween, students and parents from the CC community will be encouraged to donate their surplus Halloween candy for Operation Gratitude. Operation Gratitude helps make care packages for service men and women who are currently deployed overseas. We will be collecting candy all week long, before Ms. Stover takes it to a local dentist who will then ship it to Operation Gratitude. This will help lift their spirits, knowing that we are thinking of them and thanking them for their service. For more information: https://www.operationgratitude.com/
MISSION TWO: Page Ahead
Think of how you feel when you get a new book! It’s exciting and many times, you can’t wait to immediately devour it! During the Cherry Crest book fair (November 4-6), 5th graders will be collecting donated new books from students and families at Cherry Crest. When you go to the book fair think about spending a few extra dollars for other kids in Washington state who cannot afford a new book! Page Ahead is a local, Seattle-based organization that helps provide new books and literacy materials to children ages 2-9. They are in dire need of new books to give as gifts to the children they help support in the Puget Sound area. Last year, Page Ahead helped over 35,000 children in our area! I will ask that instead of purchasing classroom books for me this year, you spend your money on purchasing a book to donate to Page Ahead instead. We realize not all families are able to afford to participate, but we hope you will consider making a donation of a new book! For more information: http://www.pageahead.org/
Next week, we will be collaborating, brainstorming and organizing our efforts–poster making, giving presentations to other classrooms, setting up our needed supplies so that we’re ready to go on Monday, November 3rd. Lots of excitement today in Room 204 as I launched both projects! We’re looking forward to kids learning and growing through these experiences; we are grateful for all that we have and we find joy in helping others!
