Robotics Information

Robotics – Parent Information Night for 4^th and 5^th grade sign-ups following Curriculum Night this Wednesday, 9/17, from 7:10 – 7:30 in the Library. Parents only, will meet with The Chargers Robotics Club Mentors Mr. Cockerham and Mr. Cordell and receive Club information, Registration forms, and parents may request Robotics kits to check-out for use by their team.

G5 T.V. "Social Studies Jigsaw" Episode 1

In this episode, students are teaching each other various sections of chapter 1 "Geography of the United States". This included longitude, latitude, compass rose, the 4 hemispheres, equator, prime meridian, and all the different geographic land forms.

Week 2 Update

1. Curriculum Night: Next Wednesday, September 17^th is Curriculum Night for Cherry Crest’s intermediate grades (3-5).  Please join us!  We will be sharing important 5^th grade information (it’s a crazy, busy year!), as well as offer sign-ups for classroom parties, field trips etc.
2. Conferences:  Conferences will start in the beginning of October.  I will email an electronic sign up soon.
3. Homework:  We are slowing easing into it, but please know that starting next week, students will be expected to do more than homework they have had to do these past two weeks.  In addition to the short-term and long-term assignments, your child should be reading regularly (ideally 20-30+ minutes) each night!  Your child will have an average of 50-60 minutes of homework per night.
4. Classroom blog: Please make sure you familiarize yourself with the homepage and other pages on the blog (G5 calendar, math links, G5life T.V.) as I will be relaying important information to families on the website.

It was awesome to see the past, present, and future members of the G5! A wise person once said... "G5 leads the way!"

Morning walk or jog at Cherry Crest!

Mrs. Nordstrom is offering a walking/jogging group for 3rd-5th graders on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, starting this Monday. It will go from 7:40 – 7:53 am. Students can drop off younger siblings at the cafeteria, place their backpacks in the line for their classes in the undercover area, and then head for the track.

Students MAY NOT play on the field during this time, it is just the track that will be used. If they arrive early, please wait for Mrs. Nordstrom to arrive to start so they have supervision. Depending on interest and numbers she may need to change the days and times but we will get started with this. Mrs. Nordstrom will blow the whistle at 7:50 so they can walk off the track and be in line by 7:53 am.

End of Week 1

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the 2014-2015 school year!  We are so glad to have your child, and you, as a part of our G5 family this year!  Fifth grade is a year of great change, hard work and fun!  We hope you enjoy the ride!

 Just a few things as we wrap up Week 1:

1.       Forms!  I know the beginning of the year paperwork is oftentimes overwhelming.  Tomorrow your child will come home with his/ her regular BSD folder full of district forms, emergency release forms etc.  These can be turned into me or the front office.  In addition to this packet, your child came home with an Edmodo (educational communication tool used throughout the district) permission form as well as a Patrol sign-up sheet.  We thank you in advance for getting all of these filled out in a timely manner.

2.       Curriculum Night is on Wednesday, September 17^th!  We hope you are planning on joining us!  Fifth grade is a BIG YEAR and we have a lot of information to share.  Mrs. Stover and I will do a joint event in her classroom (Room 204), since we are a teaching team and since the curriculum information is the same for all 5^th graders.  In addition to learning about this school year and student expectations, there will also be sign-ups for field trips and classroom parties.
3.       Classroom Websites.  If you haven’t checked them out yet, we urge you to become familiar with them, as you (and your child) will need to access them regularly.  I would suggest “Following” my classroom blog so that you are notified every time there is a new post made.

4.       End of Week One!  A successful week; it has been wonderful getting to know all of our new kiddos!  We hope they have enjoyed this week as much as we have.  Change and adjustment to two new classrooms and two new teaching styles can be difficult, so it may take another few days for your child to feel like he/she is in a rhythm.  Definitely a social group of kiddos, so we will be continuing to consistently reinforce 5^th grade level expectations as we begin next week.

Regala & Stover 

First Shoda Challenge Complete "Marshmallow Challenge".

Wow, what a fun event in Rooms 203 and 204!  Our annual 5th grade Marshmallow Challenge was a great success and Shoda has returned to Team Regala's classroom.   Great job Mrs. Stover's class! With just one marshmallow, string, tape and spaghetti noodles, students from both classes attempted to build the tallest, free-standing structure possible in 18 minutes.  It was exciting to watch students work together, collaborating, communicating and cooperating putting their fabulous ideas to the test.  We had fun during challenge and spent approximately 30 minutes afterwards reflecting on what made this challenge successful and identifying the challenges as well.  Students were reflective, insightful and full of bright ideas!.  It was incredible to see them communicate with one another about what they did well and what they might do differently next time.

In the meantime, ask your child, who generally performs better: businessmen or Kindergarteners with this challenge?  Most importantly, why?  You might be surprised by the answer!

Introducing Mrs. Blackard

Dear G5 Parents,

 

Hello! I’m Mrs. Blackard, Mr. Regala’s student teacher for the 2014-2015 school year.  This first week at Cherry Crest has been wonderful and I feel very welcomed by all of the teachers, staff, and students!  I can already tell how lucky I am to not only have such compassionate, respectful, and eager students, but to also have such a fun and energetic teacher like Mr. Regala!  I am excited to be part of the G5 community!

 

To give you a better idea about myself …  I am originally from Chicago, and moved to the Seattle area over eight years ago.  I received my Bachelor of Science in Architecture from Ball State University, and my Master of Architecture from the University of Washington.  The past several years I have worked as an Architect in both Indianapolis and Seattle.   Earlier this year I made the decision to change career paths in order to more directly affect the community and help youth.  I am currently in Seattle University’s Master in Teaching program and will be in Mr. Regala’s class through March.   I am looking forward to the school year ahead, helping your wonderful students achieve their educational goals, and learning from each one of them!
