In social studies, students have been assuming the roles of colonists in Boston 1765. They have been learning about the key events that lead to tensions between the colonists and Britain. This includes the French Indian War, The Proclamation of 1763, The Stamp Act, Quartering Act, Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party, and the Intolerable Acts. During their story path, the students participated in a role play that had them in colonial families. Each family had a specific job and had to order essential supplies from Britain to keep their business running. During the activity, the Stamp Act and Townshend Acts passed which taxed the colonist on items imported from Britain. We used "Skittles" to simulate the money that was being taxed and I collected their money until they were down to a few Skittles. This was meant to get the students to experience how the colonists felt when they were taxed. At a town meeting, the students responded to the unfair taxes with anger and talked about how it was unfair . They decided to protest by making signs and voicing their outrage when Governor Thomas Huntchinson (Loyal to Britain) visited their town hall meeting. It was not a pretty sight... :)
