Today, students had the amazing opportunity to listen to Borge Ousland at the National Geographic Live presentation, Benaroya hall. Borge Ousland spoke about his numerous adventures to the North Pole and used pictures and video to show the students what it was like to be out in one of the harshest environments in the world. He is the first person to cross the Arctic alone! He went from Russia to Canada via the North Pole and it took him a total of 82 days! He demonstrated perseverance, dedication, and passion to succeed!
What areas has Borge has Explored?
Answer: Both Poles
What are some of his accomplishments?
The first person to cross Antarctica solo and unsupported with resupply, Ousland more recently completed the first ever sea crossing of the Northwest and Northeast Passages in a single season. In 2011, he led an expedition to Antarctica to mark the anniversary of Amundsen's conquest of the South Pole.
What motivates Borge Ousland to explore the Polar regions?
Borge Ousland said "I really feel that I do what I want in life, to explore the unknown and share the spirit of adventure and love for nature with other people through books, lectures, blog, and films. To be in the middle of the strong Arctic or Antarctic nature with just your sled and skies, to be self-supplied for up to three months at the time, is a lifelong and intense experience."
